Less freedom of movement

The good old days” or after World War II
Few people had taken a travel abroad. Someone had visitid Sweden. They look back to the lovely Bore. You could travel round Finland by Mosse or Kuplavolkkari, you and your spouse and five children in the car. The family slept in a Sopu tent. Life was great.
My geography teacher had made a bus trip round Europe just after the war. She was an only person in our village, who could tell us about Europe.
A way to neighbouring town or village took time. Trains and busses were slow and they maybe run  once a day. But people had bicycles and motorbikes – with a sidecar.
My sister took a travel to China in the 60s. Our mother told later that she had thought ”she won't come back”.
Only a few had a TV, and the Internet and email were starting.

Nowadays
All this means that you had to stay home. Not our trips for weekend to London or Paris. No holidays in Trinidad. You could go to university in US if you were wealthy (very wealthy). Have you wanted an inter rail pass? Not a hope. About all people have got trip or a lot of trips to China. The world was small, and we didn't know people around the world.

  1. That's a great post, Kerttuli, it makes the past seem very real. Things are definitely very different now. And when you were young, did you have the opportunity to travel abroad?

    1. I worked In Stockholm in one summer when I was a student. And in another summer in Kiruna. It's all. But some years later I made trips to Denmark (a bicykle trip), Norway (the same) and a holiday trip to Jalta. England, Italia and others came a little bit later.
